Caroline Kist is drawn towards the extraordinary that dwells in the ordinary. Photography is waiting, she says, waiting for the unknown to emerge within the worlds in which she lives. Her images vacillate between what she sees and what she’s searching for. Nothing is certain in its knowability; it’s a practice of observing and shifting perceptions. Working slowly, both in time and materials, Kist foregrounds that which is readily left unnoticed. In a society where speed and efficiency are the norm, through her image-making, she seeks a slower, gentler world.
