Geduld van het landschap

Geduld van het landschap

Vivian Ammerlaan

03.10 - 07.11.2026

Geduld van het landschap (Patience of the Landscape) brings together a selection of works by artist Vivian Ammerlaan, created between 2024 and 2026, alongside new works in which her artistic research continues to unfold.

In recent years, Ammerlaan’s practice has increasingly shifted towards analogue photographic processes, in which light, chemistry, paper and time all contribute to the formation of the image. The process slows down and requires attention, patience, and a willingness to relinquish some control. This creates space for the unexpected. Not everything can be conceived in advance; some images only reveal themselves through the process.

Ammerlaan’s landscapes refer to mountains, trees, mist and vast expanses that feel familiar, yet exist nowhere. Rather than simply depicting a landscape, she seeks to allow the work itself to behave like a landscape. Chemical reactions move through the paper like water through earth. Stains, discolourations and frayed edges become traces of time, much like erosion, sedimentation and weathering shape a landscape. The material carries its own history and, in doing so, becomes an active participant in the formation of the image.

In the new works, Ammerlaan continues this exploration. By experimenting with new formats, forms of presentation and analogue techniques, she investigates how the landscape can continue to evolve when the process itself changes.

Geduld van het landschap is about a way of making in which not everything is directed or resolved. The image does not need to be conquered, but is given time to slowly emerge. Just as a landscape takes centuries to form, each work unfolds step by step, through an ongoing interplay between intention, material and chance.
