How Shall We Greet the Sun explores the personal stories and emotional lives of a group of young women refugees living in the Netherlands, including Thana Faroq. The project reflects on their shared and individual journeys, shaped by new cultural contexts, memories, power dynamics, and longing for the past, as they navigate the formation of new identities.
In this work, Thana Faroq combines image and text to examine how the identities of this generation of migrant women are continuously constructed and reshaped by both their present circumstances and the homes they left behind. As Thana Faroq writes, “We are in a kind of archaeological restoration program, where we try to build and construct a new life over the ruins of our past losses. Our homes are under construction. Our bodies are under construction. Our finances are under construction. Our identity is under construction.”
Thana Faroq is a Yemeni photographer, writer, and educator based in the Netherlands who works across photography, text, sound, and material forms. Thana Faroq’s practice is deeply reflective and grounded in close engagement with her subjects, often returning to photograph them over time. Through this ongoing approach, Thana Faroq creates work that resonates with themes of memory, migration, belonging, and intergenerational experience.
