Ommelanden centres on growing up in the northernmost part of the Netherlands. In this book, David van Dartel portrays close-knit communities, love, the future, and the expansive polders that shape a sense of freedom.
The title refers to the regions surrounding the city of Groningen, areas often depicted one-dimensionally in news media through narratives of earthquakes, socio-economic hardship, and decline. Together with writer Pepijn Keppel, David van Dartel spent three months on a farm north of Usquert, between the village and the Wadden Sea. While not ignoring these realities, he discovered a far more layered landscape: monumental villages, a rich history, and above all, young people deeply connected to one another. Through extended time, research, and encounters with residents, the prevailing image began to feel incomplete.
Ommelanden emerged from this period as David van Dartel’s personal interpretation of North-East Groningen, created with the intention of offering a broader and more nuanced perspective on the region.
