When Dominique de Vries realised he would soon leave his childhood home to fend for himself, his body filled with dread. He grew up in Hellevoetsluis as the son of a Dutch father and a Polish mother. After his parents divorced when he was seven, he remained with his mother and younger brother. As the eldest child in a bicultural family, a weight of responsibility fell on him early, urging him to grow up quickly and confront the feeling of his childhood slipping away.

In Now I Know How to Tell You, Dominique de Vries searches for this lost period of youth in the landscape surrounding his hometown. Over the course of three years, he wandered through these environments in an attempt to understand what he had missed, what could still be reclaimed, and what he needed to let go of. The quiet rural surroundings and the situations he encountered became reflections of his inner world.
